About horses was our latest prompt, this one from Dora, at dVerse Poets.
A little fun.
.
Farm Rivalry – A Short Horse Western
Hold your horses shushed the horse whisperer
at the gate
there are stories to be shared from the horse you rode in on
that one has secrets ya know,
no, ya don’t, do ya
you’re a horse of a different color
ain’t ya
maybe even sent from Troy’s farm
To gain entrance to our barn
to learn secrets of the hay
enough to choke a horse
and then bolt away
before the stable door is closed too late
.
Ya may think we have no horse sense
in this one-horse farm easily fooled
schooled
to which we whinny “horse hockey!”
“horse feathers!”
we know you feel your own pack is the heaviest
wanting ease instead
nothing more than to drive a coach right through our
well earned hay
and take our way
but,
and this is straight from the horse’s mouth,
we will not be taken in, led away by bridled hand
and even wild brethren couldn’t drive us off our land
and any stalking horse that you have at hoof
will have backed wrong
this ill-conceived horse opera as proof

Wow, Steve, you made it across Mr. Linky’s finish line by a nose! Good on you, my friend. Your poem reads like a political horse opera indeed, with allusions galore and idioms that kick up the dust. Keeping our horse sense sharp in this political clime with all the horsetrading going on isn’t easy. And, if I read you correctly, this Trojan horse or stalking horse better beware. They may not make it over the finish line. “Farm Rivalry” — Can’t think of a better title for this horse race!

Yeah, I know Dora, just barely!!! A lot going on this week (I’m moving again on Saturday, to Albany and a slight change in the job setup) but I really wanted to finish this one, so I pretended I was working and got it in just at the wire (with a few post posting edits)!! I loved the idea and then to have some fun with horse idioms. Glad ya like my title, that was a last bit.
Cheers Dora!! 🙂

You did get in quite a few horse idioms there in this horse opera! I so enjoyed reading this, Stephen.

I love how you made this work, so many sayings we use in the everyday, but also a great metaphor for the moment we’re in.
