They Thought Themselves a Play of Some Renown (poetics – poem)

Earlier this week there was a prompt from Merril where she wrote of butterflies, Poetics: But no, a butterfly, and provided a list of butterfly names for us to possibly work a poem around, asking for 3 or more of the names to be included.

Well, it’s been pretty busy for me of late and I wasn’t able to get to the prompt during the week in the window with all the others, but I held some thoughts till the weekend to see what I could do because it was really cool idea.

Ended up having some fun.

Thanks Merril.

They Thought Themselves a Play of Some Renown

They thought themselves a play

unordinary

new bards of some renown

For groundling pennied revelry

and even seated ladies

shown to out the town

.

Small wood nymph’s abscond

the Duke of Burgundy

and his ego of renown

to overplay his overbold

lifetime story overtold

where he’d be fancied, but a clown

.

Wandering skipper comes to ground

unwandered then

director of renown

to rein in chaos of speckled wood

from forest to maiden’s trees

on a lawn within the round

.

Pine Satyr is set to mischieve

and lead famously

The actor of renown

With Autumn leaf to float his wife

They’ll dance along the limbs

Never needing touch the ground

.

They’d be known then all

From wood to moat

these new bards of renown

Large tortoiseshell would keep the coin

Golden birdwing would sing their songs

Regale from town to town

.

And with each stop

They’d think themselves

a play of their renown

for groundling pennied revelry

and those seated ladies

taken out the town

.

That with fresh Duke abscond anew

they will

from latest town of some renown

to play themselves of boasting pomp

habit fine and manner tight

but be fancied still, always to be clowned
