There was a prompt at dVerse earlier in the week from Sanaa, a one for the spooky season, to write a poem based on one of a selection of thirteen “haunted” songs, Poetics: Thirteen songs – Thirteen haunting.
Kudos to Sanaa for the great selection of tunes, including one from Echo & the Bunnymen (a big time 80’s favorite of mine who I was gladly sidetracked by via some YouTube reminiscing) and their tune “The Killing Moon.”
Now I didn’t get a poem in “in time” for the prompt to upload it with all the others, though I do recommend checking them out in the link box at the end of the post prompt I have up top, but I did think on and Echo’s “The Killing Moon” and the Moon specifically, something I know all of us have used for inspiration at one point or another, I know have.
For another time I’m especially fond of this one and one of my most viewed, nice when it works like that.

The Moon Was in the News Again – Suspect #1
The moon was in the news again
just as it’s always been
as death and romance
do not mutually exclude
when searching out a muse
He was Suspect Number One
or was it She
who’s to know of one made of cheese
in times like these
it depends on the seer
and their stories mongered of the crime
with claims of the peculiars of the moon
driving madness of manners all
into the thralls
of poetry and romance and song
and plays
of plotted dark happenstance
explained happy coincidence
for authorities to parse incidents
“just the facts”
over interrogation’s coffee and skeptical sense
of the mystery of it all
while Moon’s mugshot hangs on every wall
with grins askew or full faced anew
pulling our tides in and out,
over and under
swimming and drowning
sowing doubt
mocking our blames in its name
for neglecting cautionary night sky bulletin’s tack-up
and all the damage done
instead fixing with dream wrought pin-ups
and portraits to couple us
made pretty and dreamy and bold
not tragic and wasted and cold
but when death and romance collide in new old stories
again
The Moon will be in the news
just as it’s always been
